How it's worked out
How making charges are worked out
Shops charge making in one of three ways: per gram (rupees × the net weight), as a % of the metal value, or as one flat amount for the piece.
On a jewellery bill, GST is 3% on metal and making together: CGST 1.5% + SGST 1.5% in the same state, or IGST 3% from another state.
Job work is different. When a karigar or workshop makes jewellery from a registered jeweller's gold and bills only for the work, GST is 5% on the job charge: CGST 2.5% + SGST 2.5%, or IGST 5%. The GST billing guide and the HSN code guide give the sources.
22K chain · 10 g · ₹500/g making Worked example
An example, step by step
A 22K chain weighs 10 g. The 22K rate is ₹91,600 per 10 g (an example, not today's rate) and making is ₹500 a gram. The customer is in the same state.
- 1 Metal 10 g at ₹91,600 per 10 g ₹91,600
- 2 Making 10 g × ₹500 ₹5,000
- 3 GST 3% CGST 1.5% + SGST 1.5% on metal and making ₹2,898
- 4 Estimated total What the customer pays ₹99,498
If a karigar billed the same ₹500 a gram as job work on a jeweller's gold, GST would be 5% of ₹5,000: ₹250.

Questions about making charges
Three common ways: per gram (rupees × the net weight), as a percentage of the metal value, or as one flat amount for the piece. Pick the way your shop charges and the calculator does the rest.
Yes. On a jewellery bill, GST is 3% on metal and making together: CGST 1.5% + SGST 1.5% in the same state, or IGST 3% for a customer in another state.
When a karigar or workshop makes jewellery from gold that belongs to a registered jeweller and bills only for the work, GST is 5% on the job charge: CGST 2.5% + SGST 2.5%, or IGST 5%. Job work on diamonds has its own rate, 1.5%. The HSN code guide lists the sources.
The GST treatment of that case is argued about, so check with your CA. This calculator's job work option is for work done for a registered jeweller.
On its own line, as a percentage, per gram or a flat amount, whichever your shop uses. The jewellery bill format guide shows a full bill.
