Two different jobs: the counter and the books
Most jewellery shops have two kinds of work. At the counter, a salesperson weighs a piece, prices it at today’s rate, adds making and stones, takes the customer’s old gold, splits the payment and hands over a GST bill. In the books, your munim or CA keeps ledgers, matches the bank, files GST returns and closes the year.
TallyPrime grew up on the books side. Its own jewellery pages show it has added counter features too: making charges by fixed rate, percentage or per gram on one invoice, stock by purity, weight and tag number, items issued to karigars and items given on approval. CaratOS is built from the counter side: every bill starts from your rate per gram for the karat, old gold sits on the same bill, and the HUID goes from stock to bill on its own.
So the honest question is not only “which one?”. For many shops it is “who does what?”. This page sets out both so you can decide with your CA.
Who should pick which
- TallyPrime alone can suit a shop where the owner or munim already bills in Tally, sales are few, and nobody wants a second system. Tally sells a lifetime licence, keeps your data on your own computer, and supports many Indian languages, which some owners prefer.
- CaratOS at the counter, Tally for the books suits a shop with old gold exchange on many bills, HUID on every piece, staff who need their own discount limits, customers who want the bill on WhatsApp, and a CA who wants to keep working in Tally. CaratOS sends the figures across: a Tally export on Starter, live sync on Growth.
- CaratOS alone can suit a shop whose CA is happy with CaratOS reports. The GST summary gives your GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and HSN figures, your CA gets a free read-only login, and Growth adds books and ledgers, purchase bills and the GSTR-1 file for the portal.
- Not CaratOS, today, if you need girvi (gold loans), RFID or a manufacturing bill of materials. Tally’s jewellery inventory page mentions RFID; for girvi or a bill of materials, ask Tally or your Tally partner, as its jewellery pages don’t list them.
CaratOS and TallyPrime side by side
Each TallyPrime cell comes from Tally’s own website, checked on 1 November 2026. Where a cell says something is not named, it means Tally’s pages don’t say it, not that TallyPrime can’t do it. Ask Tally or a Tally partner to show you. Prices are as each company publishes them; we have not converted them.

Where TallyPrime is stronger
- Your CA probably knows it. Full accounting and GST returns, including filing GSTR-1 from inside TallyPrime, in software many munims and CAs already use every day.
- A lifetime licence. If you would rather pay once than every month, Tally sells Silver and Gold licences for life. CaratOS is a monthly or yearly plan.
- Data on your own computer. Tally keeps your data on your machine. CaratOS runs online today, so the counter needs internet; a desktop version is coming but isn’t out yet.
- More languages and RFID. Tally lists many Indian languages and mentions RFID. CaratOS has English and Hindi, and no RFID.
Where CaratOS is stronger
- Built around the jewellery bill. Your gold and silver rate per gram for each karat, making and stones line by line, old gold taken off the same bill, and the HUID printed on each line. See Billing and old gold.
- Your staff, with limits. On Growth each of 5 people gets their own login and role. A discount above someone’s limit waits for your OK. See Team.
- Bills that leave with the customer. Share the GST bill on WhatsApp or email, print it, or save a PDF, and split cash, UPI and card on one bill.
- A price you can see. Plans are on our pricing page with GST included, and bills, stock and customers are unlimited on every plan.
How CaratOS and Tally work together
You don’t have to choose one and throw out the other. Bill at the counter in CaratOS. At the end of the day or month, your figures go to Tally for your CA.
On Starter, export your books from CaratOS and bring them into Tally, so your munim doesn’t retype bills. On Growth, Tally live sync keeps Tally up to date by itself.
Your CA also gets a free read-only login to CaratOS on every plan, so they can check a bill or a report without asking you. More on the CA side in GST and your CA and the GST billing guide. For what Tally does well in a jewellery shop and what the counter adds, read Tally for jewellery shops.
Moving your counter from Tally to CaratOS
If you bill in Tally today and want the counter in CaratOS, the move is mostly your stock and your customers. Your books can stay in Tally.
Steps to move from Tally
- Export from Tally. Tally’s help pages show how to export masters, vouchers and reports to Excel, PDF, XML and more. Your munim can export your stock items and customer balances.
- Send it to us, or import it yourself. Help moving from Tally is included on every plan. Send us the export or your Excel sheets and we bring your stock, customers and dues into CaratOS. You can also import opening stock from an Excel sheet yourself.
- Check every row. Rows that need a second look are shown before anything is added, so nothing lands in your stock by mistake.
- Set today’s rates and make a bill. Set your gold and silver rates, make a real bill with old gold, and check it with your CA.
- Keep Tally for the books. Turn on the Tally export (or live sync on Growth), and your CA carries on in Tally as before.
What CaratOS doesn’t do today
CaratOS doesn’t do girvi (gold loans), RFID or a manufacturing bill of materials. There is no Android app. It runs in the browser and needs internet; CaratOS Desktop is coming soon, with no date yet. If any of these matter to your shop, tell us when you book a demo.
