Why so many jewellery shops use Tally
Walk into many jewellery shops in India and ask who keeps the books, and the answer is often the munim or the CA, in Tally. It has been widely used by Indian small businesses for many years, so CAs know it, staff have often learnt it in a course, and the year’s ledgers are already in it.
That matters. Your CA files your GST returns, prepares your balance sheet and answers notices. If they are comfortable in Tally, asking them to change is a real cost, even if a new tool looks better on a demo.
So the useful question for most shops is not “Tally or something else?” It is “What should Tally do in my shop, and what should happen at the counter?”
What Tally does well in a jewellery shop
- Books and ledgers. Cash book, bank book, party ledgers, journal entries and the year-end figures your CA needs.
- GST work. Your CA can prepare returns from the sales and purchase entries kept in Tally.
- Purchase and supplier accounts. What you owe each bullion dealer or wholesaler, and what you have paid.
- A CA who already knows it. No training, no new habits, and years of your history in one place.
- A jewellery setup from Tally itself. Tally Solutions’ jewellery page, read on 1 November 2026, says it can work out making charges “by fixed rate, percentage, or per gram”, “track stock by purity, weight, and type”, track material “issued to and received from Karigars (artisans)”, and “manage items given on approval”.
Tally’s editions, from its own page

What jewellers usually add at the counter
Accounting software is built around entries: a sale, a purchase, a payment. A jewellery counter is built around a piece on the scale and the rate for the day. Some shops do all of this inside Tally with a jewellery setup; many add a counter tool made only for jewellery. Either way, these are the jobs to check.
The jobs a jewellery counter has to handle
- The day’s rate by karat. You set 24K, 22K, 18K and silver rates each morning, and every new bill prices each piece from its exact weight at that rate.
- Making and stones, piece by piece. Making as a percentage, per gram or a flat amount, with stones and diamonds priced apart from the metal.
- Old gold on the same bill. Weigh it, enter the tested purity, value the fine weight at your old-gold rate and take it off what the customer pays. The old gold should then show up in your old-gold stock.
- HUID on every line. Each hallmarked piece carries its HUID from your stock to the bill. See the stock and HUID guide.
- Split payments and dues. Cash, UPI and card on one bill, with anything left going to the customer’s dues.
- The bill on WhatsApp. The customer gets the GST bill on their phone before they leave.
- Karigar metal. How much gold went out to each karigar, how much came back and what is still with them. See the karigar guide.
- Kitty schemes. Monthly instalments from members, reminders and what each member has paid. See the kitty scheme guide.
- Staff limits. Each salesperson gets a discount limit, and cost prices stay hidden from people who don’t need them.
Where each job usually sits
There is no single right split. This is a common pattern in shops that keep Tally for the books and use jewellery software at the counter.
| Job | Usually done in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Making the bill at the counter | Counter software | Needs the day’s rate, weight, making, old gold and HUID in one screen |
| Stock by piece, weight and purity | Counter software | The salesperson looks up and tags pieces all day |
| Karigar issues and returns | Either | Depends on whether the owner or the CA tracks it |
| Ledgers, bank and journal entries | Tally | The CA works there and closes the year there |
| GST returns | Tally or the CA’s own tools | The CA files; the counter must hand over clean figures |
| Balance sheet and audit | Tally | The CA’s home ground |
The real problem: typing bills twice
The trouble starts when the counter and Tally don’t talk. Someone makes 40 bills in the day, then the munim types the same 40 bills into Tally at night or at month end. Figures slip, an old gold exchange is entered as a discount, a UPI payment lands in cash, and the GST totals in Tally stop matching the bill book.
Whatever tools you use, ask one question: how do the counter’s bills reach Tally? There are three common answers.
Three ways to get counter bills into Tally
- Retyping. The munim enters each bill by hand. It costs nothing extra but takes hours and invites mistakes.
- Export and import. The counter software makes a file for a date range, and the munim or CA imports it into Tally. Done daily or weekly, it is simple and leaves your CA in charge of what goes in.
- Live sync. Entries go from the counter to Tally on their own as you bill. Nobody has to remember to export, and Tally keeps up through the day.
How CaratOS works with Tally
CaratOS is jewellery software for the counter: billing at your rate with old gold, stock with weight, purity and HUID, dues, karigar jobs, and kitty schemes on Growth. It doesn’t ask your CA to give up Tally.
Tally export on every plan. On Starter, export your books from CaratOS as a file for the dates you choose and bring them into Tally. Your CA keeps working where they always have.
Tally live sync on Growth. Growth adds live sync, so Tally keeps up by itself. In the demo, ask us how it connects to the computer where your Tally runs.
A free login for your CA. Your CA or munim gets their own read-only login on every plan, free, on top of your team. They see the reports and GST figures; they can’t change a bill.
GST figures ready. The GST summary gives the figures for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B month by month, with the HSN summary, and an Excel export. Growth adds the GSTR-1 file for the portal. Read the GST billing guide and the HSN code guide.
Purchase bills, books and ledgers on Growth. If you want to keep more of the accounts in CaratOS too, Growth has purchase bills, suppliers, books and ledgers.
Help moving. We help every plan move stock and customers in from Tally, Vyapar, Marg or Excel.
| Plan | Tally | Price (GST included) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Export only | ₹1,199 a month |
| Growth | Export and live sync | ₹3,999 a month or ₹42,999 a year |
What CaratOS doesn’t do today
CaratOS runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, in English or Hindi, and needs an internet connection. CaratOS Desktop is coming soon, with no date yet. There is no Android app, no girvi (gold loans), no RFID and no manufacturing BOM. Starter covers one branch; more branches, with transfers between them, are on Growth. Karigar jobs are on every plan, while production stages, karigar pay and wastage are on Growth.
Questions to ask before you link any software to Tally
- Can you show a real bill, with old gold and a cash and UPI split, arriving in Tally with the right ledgers?
- Does the old gold come into Tally as a purchase, or as a discount on the sale?
- What happens in Tally if I cancel or return a bill at the counter?
- Does my CA need to set anything up in Tally first?
- If the internet or Tally’s computer is off, what happens to the entries made meanwhile?
- Can my CA check the counter’s figures without asking me for files every month?
See it with your own Tally
Book a demo and bring your CA or munim if you can. We’ll make a bill from your shop in CaratOS and show how it reaches Tally. You can also request a 15-day Starter trial with no card; it begins when CaratOS approves your request. See pricing, or write to hello@caratos.co.in or call +91 92208 22217.
Questions shop owners ask
Can a jewellery shop run only on Tally?
Some do. Tally Solutions’ jewellery page lists making charges, stock by purity and weight, karigar issues and items on approval. Many shops still use jewellery software at the counter for the day’s rate, old gold and HUID on the bill, and keep Tally for the books.
Is Tally jewellery billing software?
Tally is accounting software. Tally Solutions also sells a jewellery billing setup of TallyPrime. Check in a demo that it handles your counter’s work: rates by karat, old gold on the bill, HUID on every line and split payments.
Does CaratOS work with Tally?
Yes. Every plan can export your books from CaratOS to bring into Tally. Growth adds Tally live sync, so Tally keeps up by itself. Your CA also gets a free read-only login to CaratOS.
Do I have to stop using Tally to use CaratOS?
No. Many shops keep Tally for the books and their CA, and use CaratOS at the counter for bills, stock, old gold and dues. CaratOS sends the entries to Tally by export on Starter, or live sync on Growth.
Can I move my data from Tally to CaratOS?
Yes. Help moving from Tally, Vyapar, Marg or Excel is included on every plan. Ask us in the demo what to bring.
How much does CaratOS cost?
Starter is ₹1,199 a month and Growth ₹3,999 a month or ₹42,999 a year, GST included. You can request a 15-day Starter trial with no card; it begins when CaratOS approves your request.
